In a typographic exercise, my task was to create a poster for the Golden Gate Park Events' October 2019 happenings. "Swiss design" is a rather unfocused term that speaks of a simple, blocky and design foundation oriented name for a European design trend that blew up in popularity through the 20th century — a trend that I was heavily inspired by in this project.
As mentioned, there are direct references to the movement that came to be called "Swiss design" in this poster. But while I love the simplicity and culture change that this trend came with in the 20th century, the world looked very different compared to today, and I needed to implement some contemporary details too. The use of a slab serif (Rockwell) was a clear distinction from my part in an attempt to create something new. Together with Rockwell, I used Trade Gothic, a typeface that contrasts Rockwell in an amazing way. They share similar typographic features, such as x-heights for example, but its both of their adherence to boldness that makes them in their own unique way pop out of the background and into the foreground.
